Chiropractic Manual Therapy Outperforms Physical Therapy and Medical Treatment for Neck Pain

According to a survey by the National Institute of Health Statistics, about 15 percent of people in the U.S. suffer from neck pain. Some experts estimate that the number of people who will have a problem with neck pain at some point in their lives may be as high as 40 percent. Neck pain is commonly treated with physical therapy and Chiropractic manual therapy, as well as with drugs and other conventional methods. However, a new study has shown manual therapy to be the most effective.
To determine this, researchers recruited 183 patients who had had neck pain for at least two weeks. They were being treated by a total of 42 general practitioners.
The patients were divided into three groups and randomly assigned to receive manual therapy (muscular and spinal mobilization), physical therapy (mainly exercise), or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs.)
The fastest results were achieved with manual therapy, and it was more effective – after seven weeks of treatment, 68 percent of manual therapy patients were demonstrating recovery, compared to 51 percent of those receiving physical therapy and 36 percent receiving general practitioner treatment.
These differences were significant at six-month follow-up. Manual therapy also proved significantly more cost-effective than the other two interventions at one year, with total costs approximately one-third the costs of either physical therapy or general practitioner care.
Each patient kept a diary of their expenses for a full year. Both direct and indirect costs were taken into account. Costs included related visits to any doctor or health care practitioner, drugs, hospitalization and home care, as well as loss of work time, travel expenses, and so on.
So many people are suffering from neck pain, and so many people are having to watch where they spend their money, it’s important to know which treatment method will get them fully functional as soon as possible, with the lowest out of pocket expenses.
