Dirty Dozen – Chemicals in Our Foods

Organic foods have been said to be very good for us. Even though many tests and long research have brought froth mixed answers and results, many people rather take the organic route and avoid many of the chemicals one can encounter from big chain growers.
When eating organic foods, we choose to not only help the local farmer, but also skip chemicals. Big chain growers tend to use chemicals such as pesticides. This also helps in helping farm workers and neighbors avoid the harsh chemicals. This also means that there is less fossil fuel converted into fertilizers and also helps the soil become healthier and be able to sustain life and fruits for more plenty of generations to come.
Even though multiple studies by different organizations have brought mixed results, people still enjoy eating organic. Many people will go this route and take this precaution around children so they don’t consume these pesticides on their foods. This is extremely important for pregnant mothers as it was found that the child is going to absorb most of the chemicals consumed by the mother. But unfortunately not everyone has the ability to pay extra for the organic products as they usually come with a bit of a higher price.
Due to the nature of organic foods and the longer process that it takes to organically grow the products, the price will usually have a significant difference in price. But thanks to the Environmental Working Group’s annual list of the dirty dozen foods we can find what produce is better than others.
The group analyzes Department of Agriculture data about pesticide and residue data in order to rank which vegetables and fruits have less amount of chemicals on them. The group has calculated that one can reduce exposure by 80% by switching to organic when buying the following 12 foods.
Apples, celery, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, hot peppers, nectarines, peaches, potatoes, strawberries, spinach, and sweet bell peppers, amongst others, have been found to have the most pesticide with more than 45 to 60+ different chemicals are being used.
