Memorial Day 2019

MemorialDay2

Memorial Day evolved from Decoration Day which is believed to have been an impromptu observation of remembrance of fallen Civil War soldiers in different communities on different days, on both sides of the War.

In 1868, Gen John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a proclamation (General Order #11) for a nationwide observance on May 30th of every year as Decoration Day.

It was more than 50 years after the first observances of Memorial Day, after WWI, when Decoration Day was informally expanded to remember the fallen in all U.S. Wars, and it then became more broadly known as Memorial Day, though still often called Decoration Day.

Memorial Day was officially recognized as a National Holiday through federal legislation signed into law in 1967.  The following year a new law moved most federal holidays to a Monday, and Memorial Day came to be observed on the last Monday in May, officially in 1971.

Yet, the original notion of “Decoration Day” in America probably precedes the Civil War and was observed to remember all past relatives and friends, and not just those who died in war.

Then again, with more than 620,000 dead from four years of the Civil War, it’s easy to understand how we have come to observe the current Memorial Day .

As we celebrate the Memorial Day Weekend and honor. especially, those who have fallen in battle during military service to our country, please keep in mind AUSA’s role in serving as a Voice for the Army and to provide Support for the Soldier.

Enjoying the  Memorial Day Weekend is good way to honor our Fallen while we solemnly remember that they gave their all to protect our freedoms and liberties.  Without their ultimate sacrifices, we might very well not be celebrating today.
