CoVid-19 Pandemic – Chiropractic and your Immune System

Covid-19

As of March 2020, there are no cures for COVID-19 accepted in the scientific community. There are no recognized cures in conventional medicine or alternative health approaches for COVID-19. There are no vaccines, no drugs, no natural remedies, no alternative therapies that have been tested and the outcomes peer reviewed to meet any credible evidence-based standard in science.

The issue of anxiety and stress has become so prevalent that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have begun promoting information to the public. From the CDC’s website “Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can include:

  • Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones
  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Worsening of chronic health problems
  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs

“While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment.”               Dr. B.J. Palmer

There are numerous clinical studies or documented cases which have shown that Chiropractic care naturally boosts the immunity of patients by 200% or more. I have included just a few for you here.

  1. Author Katie Gilbert’s great article, “Immune Boost: This is a Spinal Zap covering how immune function is greatly improved with regular chiropractic care” was published in Psychology Today 24 August 2006. It contained the following Interesting paragraph on the flu:

“Chiropractic care was first linked to improved immunity during the deadly flu epidemic of 1917 and 1918. The funny thing was: Chiropractic patients fared better than the general population. This observation spurred a study of the field. The data reported that flu victims under chiropractic care had an estimated .25 percent death rate, a lot less than the normal rate of 5 percent among flu victims who did not receive chiropractic care.” This equates to Chiropractic patients having a 20 fold (20 times better) result.

A paper published by Dr. Rhodes’, D.C. peers in the Texas Chiropractic Association.

“The 1917 – 1918 influenza epidemic swept silently across the world bringing death and fear to homes in every land. Disease and pestilence, especially the epidemics, are little understood even now and many of the factors that spread them are still mysterious shadows, but in 1917-1918 almost nothing was known about prevention, protection, treatment or cure of influenza. The whole world stood at its mercy, or lack of it.”

He continues, “Chiropractors got fantastic results from influenza patients…” The statistics speak for themselves: In 1918, a time when there were no validated treatments for flu, the epidemic killed millions world-wide.

  1. Another study performed by the chief of cancer prevention at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor of medicine at New York University – Ronald Pero, Ph.D. In his 3 year study Dr. Pero found that the 107 chiropractic patients had a 200% greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care, and in fact a 400% greater immune competence than other people who had cancer or other serious disease. Further he found that the immune system superiority of those under chiropractic care did not diminish with age. Dr. Pero commented, “I have never seen a group other than this chiropractic group experience a 200% increase over the normal patients. This is why it is so dramatically important.” Specifically the study demonstrated that the cells responsible for engulfing and destroying viruses, bacteria, parasites and cancer cells are anywhere from 2 times to 4 times more active in people who get regular chiropractic care. Scientifically the study demonstrated that the “phagocytic respiratory burst of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and monocytes were enhanced in people that had been adjusted by chiropractors.” These are the cells in your system that are part of the first line of defense against infection and are powerful effectors of inflammation. They also modulate the balance between humoral and cell-mediated immunity by contributing to the promotion of a TH1 or TH2 response.
  2. Another study published in Chiropractic Research Journal, 1994; 3(1) showed that Chiropractic adjustments increase immune cell counts 48% in AIDS patients. At the same time for the control group who did not receive any Chiropractic care the immune cell counts actually fell 8%. So the patients receiving the Chiropractic care were very much better off for it.

For all disease the central nervous system plays a major role in healing, chiropractors are the only professionals specifically trained to locate and adjust subluxations thus removing nerve interference. According to the International Association of Chiropractic the issue of anxiety and stress has become so prevalent that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have begun promoting information to the public. From the CDC’s website “Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can include:

  • Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones
  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Worsening of chronic health problems
  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs

Among the recommendations to support oneself through the stress includes, ‘take care of your body’.[1]   “Psychological conditions, such as stress or depression, are known to compromise immune defenses and increase the likelihood of infections.”[2]

Wayne Jonas, MD in his book, How Healing Works, wrote about the principles of healing, “In condition after condition, system after system, and person after person, I found three common factors that induced healing:

(1) the rituals that helped a person have a meaningful experience, (2) the support of the whole person, and (3) the regular stimulation of a biological response.

The specific treatments and agents used varied by person, culture, theory, and place, but the processes were the same. Whole systems science showed us that a person is an ecosystem – more like a garden to be cultivated than a car to be fixed.”[3]

Chiropractic supports the whole person. Vitalistic chiropractors address more than just the mechanics of the spine.

“While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment.”   Dr. B.J. Palmer

Respiratory Viral Illness Alarms China and the World 2020

Chinese health authorities urged people in the city of Wuhan to avoid crowds and public gatherings, after warning that a new viral illness that has infected more than 400 people and killed at least 17 could spread further.

The appeal came as the World Health Organization convened a group of independent experts to advise whether the outbreak should be declared a global emergency.

This situation and the variety of questions I have been asked over the last few days have prompted me to share information that could help you avoid or greatly reduce your exposure.

“There has already been human-to-human transmission and infection of medical workers,” Li Bin, deputy director of the National Health Commission, said at a news conference with health experts. “Evidence has shown that the disease has been transmitted through the respiratory tract and there is the possibility of viral mutation.”

As we take a step back and look closely at what we are dealing with here it is important to keep things in perspective.  As the population density rises it is typical to get a correspondingly higher rate of incidence.  As with any situation which poses a threat to ourselves or those around us it is very important to remain calm while seeking information which is relevant which can be used to safeguard yourself and those in your care.

According to the latest information I have seen regarding this outbreak it is linked to Coronavirus.  This is a common virus which can cause an infection in your nose, sinuses, or upper throat. Most coronaviruses are not dangerous.  Many pathogens have the capability to mutate.  Mutation is a way of survival and in doing so can create a more dangerous strain.

ncov1

About 858 people have died from Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), which first appeared in 2012 in Saudi Arabia and then in other countries in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe. In April 2014, the first American was hospitalized for MERS in Indiana and another case was reported in Florida. Both had just returned from Saudi Arabia. In May 2015, there was an outbreak of MERS in Korea, which was the largest outbreak outside of the Arabian Peninsula. In 2003, 774 people died from a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak. As of 2015, there were no further reports of cases of SARS.

MERS and SARS are types of coronaviruses.

But in early January 2020, the World Health Organization identified a new type: 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in China. By late January, there were 300 confirmed cases in China and a death count that was still in the single digits, but rising. And despite airport screenings, a traveler had brought the first case to the U.S.

These types of viruses are most commonly transmitted by contact with an infected host or vector such as a doorknob or other item the infected host has contacted.  However, as alarming is this may all be while traveling using the same basic precautions as one may use for the common cold should be applied.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.  I actually recommend essential oils such as clove which is a potent antibacterial and antiviral.
  • Keep your hands and fingers away from your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are infected.

You treat a coronavirus infection the same way you treat a cold:

  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink fluids. Primarily water.
  • For sore throats there are many natural options.  Fresh Pineapple works well, as well as salt water, peppermint, or Chamomile tea.  More on this can be found on my blog.  https://drshapero.wordpress.com/2018/02/23/sore-throat-natural-and-effective-remedies/       If you are considering an over-the-counter medicine for a sore throat and fever I caution don’t give aspirin to children or teens younger than 19; use ibuprofen or acetaminophen instead.
  • Boost your immune system with Echinacea, Goldenseal, Zinc and there are many others.

A humidifier or steamy shower can also help ease a sore and scratchy throat.

Even when a coronavirus causes MERS or SARS in other countries, the kind of coronavirus infection common in the U.S. isn’t a serious threat for an otherwise healthy adult. If you get sick, treat your symptoms and contact a doctor if they get worse or don’t go away.

The majority of those that get sick are compromised is some way.  Those that are dealing with other illnesses, higher than typical levels of stress, lack of sleep, over use of alcohol etc. are more susceptible.  Keeping the a good foundation will go far in you staying healthy.  Maintain good rest, stress management, eat a healthy diet, and use good hygiene practices.

If you suspect you have been exposed and are concerned or experience symptoms a laboratory test would be helpful.

For more information on keeping your immune system strong and greatly reducing your risk feel free to contact my office.

Just like so many other symptoms and immune challenges it is the result of some underlying irritation on the system.  The underlying cause is what we look for and once that is relieved your body will feel much better.

Yours for Better Health, Dr. Shapero
